What makes a book best-selling?

"Bestselling Author" is no longer a title that people earn by the merit of their work, but rather a description that many apply to themselves. On the other hand, some ambiguous Amazon subcategories in which achieving the top spot depends on promotion and timing, rather than selling a huge quantity of books, have yielded bestseller status, but only for a short period of time. However, in the olden days, in order to be deemed a bestselling author and earn the right to crow, you had to appear on one of the big bestseller lists, such as those published by The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, or USA Today.

As aspiring writers, I'm sure we all dream of selling a huge number of books and becoming eminent in the book industry, like J.K. Rowling, James Patterson, and a slew of other well-known authors like them. But until our books went through a legitimate, non-cheating procedure, we would never be able to satisfy our own desires to be able to call our books "best sellers."
