Creativity from the Heat of Summer

Summer is experienced once a year. Although our lives are not yet back to normal, it is important still to take advantage of the changes in between seasons. For a writer, even the seasons can affect the quality of writing. Being a writer is being sensitive to his/her feelings and surroundings. Inspiration can be drawn from everywhere: from the snow that falls during winter, the flower that blooms during spring, the leaves that sway during fall, and the heat during summer. That is why this list is here to help writers out there take advantage of the summer season in order to maximize their creativity.

Having a warmer season can be tough, but it has its benefits. Summer means more Vitamin D, which can prevent cancer, improve bone health, and gives more energy. Summer means physical health. According to a study, people are much more active during the summertime because people have difficulty going out for a jog in gray and cold weather. And summer means higher chances of improved memory. Study shows that one’s mental performance and alertness is at its best when the body temperature is high.

Common Health Issues Experienced During Summer

  • Dehydration - occurs when the body loses more water than it gains, causing lightheadedness, irritability, and dryness of the mouth.

  • Heatstroke - happens when the body is unable to cool down sufficiently after prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

  • Heat Rash - are red bumps or patches of skin caused by excessive humidity and heat.

  • Allergies - a damaging immune response by the body to a substance

  • Migraines - a type of headache characterized by excessive pain

  • Sunburn - direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause sunburns

How to Stay Healthy to Boost Creativity

Drink more water. Staying hydrated is essential to help the body in the cooling process. Aside from water, it is also recommended to consume drinks with electrolytes when exercising or doing strenuous activities. Foods high in water content can help with hydration.

Keep a healthy diet. Eating a well-balanced diet will keep the body’s immune system in good condition. A report published in the British Journal of Health Psychology found eating more fruits and vegetables correlates to better well-being and an increased sense of curiosity and creativity.

Practice Good Hygiene. One of the best ways to manage body temperature is by taking a cold shower, especially after coming from outside. Not only is the body cooled, but the risk of possible exposure to bacteria and other contaminants is also eradicated.

Sun Protection. Ultraviolet rays of the sun can cause harmful effects on the body. Avoid the sun during noontime and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 when going out. Wear clothes that cover skin and use a light, wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect the head and eyes from sun exposure.

A writer’s experiences mold his/her craft. And that includes one’s relationship with the season. Do not let the summer season ruin your chances of pursuing your next big thing for literature. Let your creative juices flow even during summertime.

We only have a few more days left this summer season but it does not mean that we should stop taking care of ourselves. Since Autumn is just around the corner, we should take advantage still of every opportunity to create something meaningful, whatever that may be. After all, creativity comes in different forms.
